A note about our website - you may notice that we typically do not include photos of actual Scouts in Pack 171. This is to protect the privacy of our Cubs. We do share photos in albums on BAND; our BAND is private and only visible to the current parents and guardians. The majority of the photos on this website come from the Scouting America Brand Center, but have been carefully chosen to represent activities our pack does.
All Cubs and their families are expected to sign a Code of Conduct every year (available in your welcome packet, on the Important Documents page, and on BAND). Highlights include:
Akelas are expected to be present physically and mentally with their Cubs. At the elementary level, it truly takes a village to keep all Cubs safe and on the right path literally and metaphorically.
Akelas of Lions and Tigers are required to attend ALL den-level meetings in addition to the pack-level events.
Akelas of Wolves, Bears, Webelos, and Arrow of Light Scouts are strongly encouraged to attend den-level meetings but not required.
All adults, registered or not, that regularly attend den and/or pack meetings and events should complete Safeguarding Youth (formerly known as YPT or Youth Protection Training) as soon as possible by the second pack meeting after joining the pack. This is for the safety of all Cubs.
Invoices should be paid as soon as possible in order to ensure events can happen as planned. Please speak to the Pack Treasurer if you need an extension or payment plan.
Issues and concerns should be brought to the attention of the appropriate pack leader as soon as possible.
Please remember that the pack’s registered leaders are all volunteers as well as parents. Thank you in advance for your grace and patience as we balance the needs of the pack with the needs of our own families.
All adults are welcome and encouraged to wear a pack or general Cub Scout t-shirt. Only current registered leaders should wear a tan (men and women) or yellow (women) uniform shirt.

ALL children are welcome to join our pack. The Cub Scout motto is "Do Your Best" and we believe everyone is capable of that.
Please communicate your Scout's needs when joining or when new things arise so we can partner in accommodating and supporting your Scout. Mr. Talbot, one of our Assistant Cubmasters, specializes in special needs Scouting and will help guide you alongside your den leader(s) and the rest of the pack leaders.

Safety Moment: Elopement
Cub Scouting is an inherently family-focused activity, and we recognize that sometimes a Cub can only attend pack or den events if their little siblings tag along with their adult partner. Siblings are typically welcome at the discretion of the pack and den leaders. However, if a sibling's behavior is repeatedly unsafe or overly disruptive, they may be asked to step back from attending events or to bring another adult along to watch them. Some activities and events may not be suitable for children preschool-age and younger; the parent/guardian should be aware and make plans accordingly to keep their child safe and entertained. Siblings should also not wear any official Scouting uniforms until they are officially enrolled in the program, though some of our families like to make unofficial "future scout" shirts or aprons.
In summary, the adult who brings a child to a Pack 171 activity or event is fully responsible for the behavior and safety of any children they bring along - Cub Scout or otherwise.
While there is no official term or program for them, we affectionately refer to the little siblings (too young to join the program) as "dragons" because we are "drag-on" them along. A "dragon" today is a Lion tomorrow! If you are bringing a "dragon" along, you will want to make sure that you have a close eye on them at all times. We suggest that you bring snacks (check with the den leader/Cubmaster on allergies), water bottles, and age-appropriate activities.
Siblings who are too old for Cub Scouts but need to occasionally tag along should similarly be watched by the adult who brought them. We strongly encourage older siblings who are in a Scouts BSA troop, Venturing crew, or Sea Scouts ship to consider becoming a Den Chief or otherwise volunteering with the pack. The den and pack leaders would be incredibly grateful for their help, and it's a great chance to work on leadership skills. Find out more about Den Chiefs here.
